MAQUOKETA, Iowa — Authorities said an investigation is underway after a Maquoketa man died shortly after being arrested Saturday morning.

Drew Edwards was pronounced dead at Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa, according to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

A press release states that county sheriff’s department deputies and Maquoketa police officers responded to the 100 block of West Apple Street in Maquoketa just after 7 a.m. Saturday after receiving a call about a “physical altercation in progress.” Edwards was arrested on “assault-related charges.”

“Soon after the arrest ... Edwards began showing signs of a medical episode, and emergency medical personnel were called to assist,” the release states. “Shortly after being transported to the Jackson County (Regional) Medical Center, Edwards was pronounced dead.”

It notes that the incident is under investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Jackson County Attorney’s Office.
