A team from the Dubuque Area Humanists recently visited the 17th Street Basin in order to effect some clean-up of the trash along the banks.

It was appalling what we found: Great quantities of plastic of all kinds, from bottle tops to plastic bags to tooth flossers, and so many cigarette butts it would be impossible to get them all.

It’s such a shame that we need volunteers to clean up after what others have carelessly left to blow into the water and foul the basin’s banks.

I would like to plead with the citizens of our beautiful city to pack out what they bring to our city streets and waterways.

As my mother used to say: “Leave it like you found it.”
