ELKADER, Iowa -- A Clayton County jury today awarded $1.2 million in damages to the family of a motorcycle driver fatally injured in a crash with a school bus in 2016.

Jurors found Clayton Ridge School District at fault in the crash in response to a lawsuit filed by the family of Ronald "John" Kephart, who died from injuries sustained in the wreck. The trial in Iowa District Court for Clayton County in Elkader started on Wednesday.

The crash occurred on Sept. 1, 2016, near Guttenberg. Authorities said Charlotte A. Scherer, 55, was driving a school bus north on Great River Road when she started turning left onto Lace Avenue. Ronald Kephart, 50, of Garnavillo, was southbound and hit the side of the bus when it turned into his path.

He was taken to Guttenberg Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to the Iowa State Patrol.

No students on the bus were injured. Scherer was cited with failure to yield upon a left turn, but the citation was later dismissed due to a plea agreement.
