James C. “Fitz” Fitzgerald, 78, of Dubuque, passed away Thursday, December 29, 2016, at Dubuque Specialty Care.

According to Jim’s wishes, there will be no public services. A private family burial will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery at a later date.

Jim was born on June 25, 1938, in Monroe, Wisconsin, the son of James E. and Monica C. (Galle) Fitzgerald. He graduated from Loras Academy High School and on November 27, 1958, he married Carol “Budie” Barton at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He worked for the Celotex Company for many years until his retirement.

Jim had a great love for baseball and played for many years. He was inducted into the Dubuque County Baseball Hall of Fame, the Dubuque Fast Pitch Hall of Fame and the Kiwanis Fast Pitch Hall of Fame; his love of the sport continued by his watching his grandchildren play the game he loved so much.

He is survived by his sons, James R., Jeffrey M. and John K. (Paula) Fitzgerald, all of Dubuque; his five grandchildren, Kristina Streif, Brittni Fitzgerald, and Sean, Chad, and David Fitzgerald; two great-grandsons, Jay and Myles; and a sister Judy Biggin, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol, on Sept. 18, 2012; his parents; a brother, Michael; and sister, Mary Ellen.

A thank you to the staff at Summit Health Center at Finley Hospital for all the care you gave to our father and grandfather.
