Athlete of the Week

Western Dubuque’s Calvin Harris takes a swing during last week’s game against Dubuque Hempstead. Harris is this week’s Telegraph Herald Athlete of the Week.

Western Dubuque junior Calvin Harris continues to produce solid numbers across the board for the Bobcat baseball team.

This week’s Telegraph Herald Athlete of the Week went 11-for-22 last week and hit four home runs while driving in 13 runs.

On the mound, he earned a save and a win in a doubleheader against Cedar Rapids Washington while recording 16 strikeouts.

“Calvin has weeks like this often,” Western Dubuque baseball coach Casey Bryant said. “He continues to be a game-changer for us.”

Through 17 games, Harris has 27 hits, four doubles, five home runs and 27 RBIs with a .551 batting average.

“Calvin is batting in the middle of our lineup and he just continues to get better at all aspects of the game,” Bryant said. “He is very deserving of his success.”

In May, Harris was selected as the 2018-19 Gatorade Iowa Baseball Player of the Year.

The Ole Miss recruit said he was shocked when he received the honor.

“I definitely wasn’t expecting it, and I was surprised when coach told me that I had won it,” he said.

Harris has played a key role in the Bobcats’ recent success. Last season, the Bobcats went 34-10 and reached the Iowa Class 4A state semifinals after winning the WaMaC Conference for the second straight year.

“We made it to Principal Park last season, and that was a great experience,” he said. “Our goal is definitely to get back there.”

With a current record of 15-2, the Bobcats seem to be on track for another postseason run.

“We have a lot of guys back from last year’s team, and we just want to keep improving. I know I am looked at as one of the leaders on this team, and I am willing to do whatever Coach needs me too in order for us to be successful.”

Added Bryant: “Calvin has very good knowledge of the game and continues to mature as a player. As the catcher, he controls our defense. When we need him to come in and pitch, he comes in and throws hard.

“He’s just a very good all-around baseball player.”
