• In 1962, in a speech at Rice University in Houston, President John F. Kennedy reaffirmed his support for the manned space program, declaring: “We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.”

• In 1977, South African student leader and anti- apartheid activist Steve Biko, 30, died while in police custody.

• In 1987, reports surfaced that Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden had borrowed, without attribution, passages of a speech by British Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock for one of his own campaign speeches. The report prompted Biden to drop his White House bid.
