Congratulations to Travis Peterson, of Dubuque, who landed a state record yellow perch during his spring break.
The 18-year-old Hempstead High School senior was fishing from shore in Mississippi River Pool 12 on March 13, and catching walleyes, sauger and northern pike. Then a 16-inch, 2-pound, 7-ounce yellow perch nailed his 1/8-ounce jig and twister.
Mike Steuck, Iowa DNR fisheries supervisor, verified the catch, which bested the previous mark by one inch and one ounce.
"This is an excellent time of year to fish below any of the Mississippi River dams," Steuck said. "Many fish species are moving to or from their spawning areas and are concentrated below the dams."
