In pari-mutuel wagering, that goes for the show wager.
The bet requires your selection to finish at least third. As a result, it’s often the lowest-paying wager. And, it’s often not a good wagering choice.
The key word is often.
I read an item on the Thoroughbred Racing Dudes website about when to make a show wager. It reaffirmed my thoughts on that wager.
In a nutshell, sometimes the betting favorite to win doesn’t receive a lot of play for the show bet. That means if the entrant wins, you get the first dip out of the show pool. If that’s the case, the payoff is larger. You end up receiving more money than normal with the wager.
To find these value plays, you need to track the wagering pools. That can be difficult because not all tracks show them at the simulcast location. However, online wagering sites will have them, and they are updated often.
It’s best to wait as long as you can to be sure a huge late wager won’t jiggle the payoffs and take away the value.
