Wayne Messam, 44, is mayor of Miramar, Fla., and a former college football star.

Wayne Messam, 44, is the Democratic mayor of Miramar, Fla. His signature issue is a proposal to eliminate the student debt owed by 44 million Americans.

His campaign also focuses on gun control, immigration and environmental issues.

He is a first-generation American born to Jamaican parents, and was elected as Miramar's first black mayor in 2015. Prior to that he served on the Miramar City Commission since 2011.
