Tulsi Gabbard, 37, is the Democratic representative from Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House. Gabbard announced that she was running for president of the United States on Jan. 11.
In 2012, she became the first Hindu elected to Congress and was assigned to the Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on Financial Services.
Prior to her election to the U.S. House, Gabbard served in the Hawaii House of Representatives and on the Honolulu City Council. She has been deployed on two tours of duty in the Middle East. Among her key issues has been opposition to American military intervention overseas, including in countries like Syria.
