Dubuque Wahlert players celebrate after beating Sergeant Bluff-Luton to win the Iowa Class 4A State Championship on Friday, Nov. 10, 2017.

Behind a dominant Aliyah Carter, Dubuque Wahlert successfully defended its Iowa Class 4A state volleyball championship this afternoon with a 3-2 victory over Sergeant Bluff-Luton at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.

Carter was named the all-tournament team captain after her 33-kill performance, which tied a Class 4A title-game record. Joining her on the team were teammates Krystal Tranel and Jenna Gremmel.

Wahlert improved to 22-9 in winning the 18th state title in program history, while Sergeant Bluff-Luton ended its season at 42-4.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton ended an impressive Wahlert streak by taking the opening set, 25-23. The Eagles hadn’t lost a set since bowing out of the 2015 postseason and swept its way to last season’s title and into the state final this year.

But the Eagles stormed back in the second set with a 25-7 romp. The momentum carried over to the third set, when Wahlert rolled to a 25-16 decision to take a 2-1 lead.

Sergeant Bluff-Luton, which ousted top-seeded Cedar Rapids Xavier in the semifinals, wasn’t done. The Warriors forced a fifth set with a 25-19 decision.

Wahlert came from behind to win the decisive fifth set, 15-8.
