The true goal of social work is the empowerment of others; that is the objective and mission of those of us in the profession.

It is no coincidence that Brad Cavanagh has decided to assume that duty and run as a candidate for Iowa House from District 99. This a mission that I have observed Brad embrace in our careers as social workers and in his teaching career.

When Brad worked in mental health, I had the pleasure of referring clients to him for counseling. As a result, many were able to change the trajectory and outcome of their lives — and that credit must go to Brad’s purposeful listening and his commitment to aiding those in need of assistance.

Brad will utilize those skills of listening to and aiding clients and students, and will apply them to creating a greater good for all Iowans.

I have also had the pleasure of watching Brad as a professor of social work at Loras College. Interns I’ve worked with routinely rank him as one of their best professors.

Additionally, he has helped build an already great program into one that routinely graduates some of the best-prepared students in the profession. This is due not only to his commitment to the program but also to the future of each student.

Brad Cavanagh takes the responsibility of his chosen profession seriously, and that is why I know that he will take those values of social justice, empowerment of others, engagement, and devotion to community to the Iowa House.
