PEOSTA, Iowa -- Authorities said a person was shot overnight during a possible burglary in Peosta.

That person, whose name has not been released, was taken by ambulance to MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center and was in stable condition as of about 8:15 a.m., according to the Dubuque County Sheriff's Department.

A press release states that the sheriff's department, Peosta police, Iowa State Patrol and Centralia-Peosta Fire Department responded to the apartment complex at 110 Peterson Drive just after midnight "for a possible burglary in progress with one subject being shot."

The release states that the person who fired the shot and the person who was shot "share a mutual acquaintance." Authorities also did not release the name of the person who fired the shot.

Sheriff Joe Kennedy stressed there is no danger to the public because this was not a random act, but he declined to release any additional information.

The incident remains under investigation.
