The Iowa State Patrol has released the names of two people who died after a crash Tuesday outside of Maquoketa.

Gary A. Schlapia, 68, and Michael K. Griffin, 61, both of Maquoketa, died at Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa following the wreck.

Authorities report that Schlapia was driving the car that turned in front of an oncoming truck. 


MAQUOKETA, Iowa -- Two people died following a two-vehicle crash Tuesday outside of Maquoketa, while two more were injured.

The names of the deceased have not been released yet.

The Iowa State Patrol reports that those injured in the wreck were Devere A. Clinton, 74, of Elkader, and Ervin Miller, 20, of Edgewood, both of whom were taken by ambulance to MercyOne Dubuque Medical Center.

The crash occurred at about 5 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of U.S. 61 and Hurstville Road north of Maquoketa. A crash report states that Clinton was driving north on the highway when a car that had been going south tried to make a left turn to get onto Hurstville Road. The car entered the path of Clinton's truck.

The vehicles collided and came to rest in the ditch.

The driver of the car and a second person were taken by ambulance to Jackson County Regional Health Center in Maquoketa, where both died.

The crash report does not specify in which vehicle the second person who died was riding, nor in which vehicle Miller was a passenger.
