MINERAL POINT, Wis. — Signature bonds of $250,000 have been ordered for a woman and her adult daughter accused in the death of a 13-year-old girl in Mineral Point.

Laurie Barry, 50, and Alexis Barry, 27, were in Iowa County Circuit Court on Tuesday for their initial appearances. Both are charged with first-degree reckless homicide as a party to a crime for the May 2018 death of Selah Kaden.

A forensic pathologist determined that Selah died from homicidal smothering or suffocation and blunt force trauma.

According to a criminal complaint, Selah’s adoptive parents paid the Barry family to care for their daughter for the summer.

Court documents state that the Barry family was aware of the girl’s behavioral issues and planned with her parents and therapist to address it while under their care. Selah’s parents gave permission to the Barry family to spank her if it was deemed necessary.

Both Laurie and Alexis Barry said Selah had many bruises and other marks and injuries from falls when she would throw herself to the ground. On the day of the girl’s death, the Barrys said, Selah fell backward “harder than she meant to and hitting her head pretty hard on the floor or possibly the bookshelf, but she stood right back up and was responding to Laurie Barry,” documents state.

The women each face a maximum of 60 years in prison, if convicted.
