GALENA, Ill. — More than 450 athletes are scheduled to compete in the Special Olympics Illinois Winter Games, set for Tuesday through Thursday at Chestnut Mountain Resort.

The event features competition in alpine skiing and snowshoe racing, according to a press release.

Special Olympics Illinois offers year-round training and competition in 18 sports for more than 23,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities and nearly 20,000 young athletes ages 2 to 7 with and without intellectual disabilities.

The opening ceremony and parade of athletes will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in downtown Galena. The opening ceremony itself will be held at the post office.
