The principal of a Dubuque elementary school set to close this year will take the helm of a different school in the fall.

Chris Nugent, principal of Fulton Elementary School, will become principal of Prescott Elementary School in the 2022-2023 school year, according to Dubuque Community Schools officials. School board members last month voted to close Fulton at the end of the current school year.

Nugent will step into the position as Prescott Principal Vicki Sullivan is on extended medical leave. Anita Gerling, a retired Iowa City Community School District principal, currently is serving as Prescott’s interim administrator.

Nugent has been principal at Fulton since 2011. Before that, she was a district-level math and instructional coach coordinator. She also has worked as a teacher at Fulton and at Irving Elementary School in Dubuque.
