SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Russell (Russ) Goebel, 49, of San Antonio, Texas, formerly of Dubuque, Iowa, died unexpectedly on June 3, 2019, at home.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today in San Antonio.
Russ was born on December 9, 1969, in Dubuque, where he earned Eagle Scout rank in 1985, and graduated from Hempstead High School in 1988. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) in 1992 with a BA in Business, and earned his MBA from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) in 1996. With his Iowa work ethic and his educational background, Russ had a successful career in financial sales and management.
Russ was quick to welcome his friends and family with a smile, and participated in friendly banter which was often instigated by him. Russ was a huge sports fan and a ridiculously fanatic Spurs fan. He watched all sports, including basketball, football, baseball, hockey, horse racing, curling, ping pong and the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest. Some would say Russ was a connoisseur of pizza, especially Happy Joe’s, when in reality, any pizza was good to him. Russ loved his family, children, stepchildren, friends and his dog immensely.
Russ is survived by his loving wife, Lisa Helling; mother, Ruth (Koelker) Schumacher (Schu); children, Jackson and Julia Raquel; stepchildren, Julia and Olivia Pruin; and brother; Brad Goebel (Margaret).
He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Ernest Goebel; fraternal grandparents, Eugene and Helen Goebel; and maternal grandparents, LuVern and Anna Mae Koelker.
Everyone will remember Russ’ kindness, thoughtfulness and humor. He was a true friend and gentlemen, and spoke often of his love of Texas, Iowa, his family and our country.
