The Dubuque Fighting Saints turned every stone between Southern Florida and Northern Alberta to help shape their future roster.

Dubuque general manager Kalle Larsson selected six forwards, three defensemen and one goaltender on Monday night in Phase I of the United States Hockey League Draft. Monday’s draft featured only players born in 2003. They will likely end up on teams’ affiliates list this fall and be tracked for future service in the USHL.

“Even though we were picking at No. 5, we still got the No. 1 guys on our draft board at forward, goalie and defense in the first three rounds, so we’re really excited,” Larsson said. “All 10 rounds we got players who will make good Fighting Saints. We missed out on one player we thought we could get in the late rounds, but, other than that, it pretty much went to plan.”

Phase II of the USHL Draft begins at 10 a.m. today and includes all players with Junior hockey eligibility remaining.
